How to Take Care of Mirrored Furniture in 3 Easy Steps

Mirrored accent pieces give the illusion of extra space while adding a bit of glam and shimmer that adapts to any surroundings without overpowering. Don’t let the prospect of keeping them clean keep you from adding this statement-making style to your home! Keep catching eyes with the sparkling impressions of your mirrored furniture by treating them with the care they need.

1) Plan ahead

Since mirrors are a more fragile material, taking extra precautions can go a long way towards keeping them safe:

• Avoid putting these pieces in high-traffic spots, smaller areas, and spots directly next to doors that may bang into them if opened carelessly
• To avoid scrapes, make sure the items you place on your mirrored surface are not sharp or jagged. Also avoid heavy objects that may nick or crack if lifted and set back down
• Kids and pets? Say no more. Mirrors are fragile, so family rooms and play rooms might not be the best place for your favorite mirrored piece to live. If you can’t resist, protect the surface during playtime with a soft blanket

2) Dust and polish weekly

Regular cleaning sounds like a pain, but the easiest way to keep your mirrored pieces glimmering and brilliant is to dust them and clean smudges routinely. Keep these tips in mind:

• Use a soft cloth with a mirror-safe glass cleaner or make a DIY solution of distilled white vinegar and water
• Spray your cleaner directly on the cloth instead of on the mirror’s surface
• Minimize residual streaks by working top to bottom and wiping in little circular motions
• Inspect from all angles. Depending on where the light is hitting, it may look like you’ve done a good job cleaning, but take a step back or to the side and you might find hidden marks and streaks

3) Keep it going

I know, I know. This part is probably the hardest to keep up with, but nonetheless…

• Clean up spills as they happen
• Liquids that sit for too long on a mirrored surface can mar the finish
• Especially be quick to clean off certain household items with chemicals like nail polish remover, hair dye, lotions, perfume and cologne, and rubbing alcohol, which could damage the surface at a quicker pace.

Note:

• Warm water and a soft lentil-free cloth are the safest cleansers for a mirror. Acidic and alkali cleaners harm the edges and surface. As a result, certain cleansers must be avoided.
• Strong ammonia-based cleansers can damage the mirror’s edges and backing.
• Spraying any cleaner straight on the mirror’s backing may also damage it. To apply any cleanser, always use a soft cloth.
• Keep all joints and edges completely dry at all times.
• 
  After a hot water bath, always clean the bathroom mirror so that the borders do not stay wet for long.
• Avoid storing the mirror in very hot or cold temperatures.
• Do not throw any substantial objects at the mirror since it may break.
